Program Preview 2014

As summer comes to a close, units in the Council begin to finalize their plans for the upcoming year. An important part of that is the annual Program Preview events held at each district in the Council. All program areas will have information available and staff members to answer questions. In addition, it’s a convenience place to pick up materials for their specific unit. It’s also the night of Popcorn Kickoff, with Council staff present to share the latest information about this year’s upcoming Popcorn Campaign. And there’s always an opportunity for Scout fellowship! The time, date and location of each district’s Program Preview is listed below.

It’s not too late for provisional summer camp!

Do you have a Scout who wants to attend more than one week of summer camp? This is a great opportunity for a Scout who is not able to attend camp this Summer with his troop to be able to go to Summer Camp. Or, a chance for a Scout that attended camp at Flaming Arrow to complete any merit badges that he may not have had time to finish. Join the provisional Troop during week three at Sand Hill – June 29 through July 5, 2014. Contact Nick Digirolamo or Sloan Yadley!

Summer Camp Week #3 – June 29 through July 5, 2014

Summer Camp 2014

Scouts, Parents and Leaders—It’s not too soon to start thinking about this year’s Summer Camp program. Summer Camp will be held June 22—28 at Flaming Arrow Scout Reservation in Lake Wales. Summer Camp Express will be July 5—8, also at Flaming Arrow. More information, including fees and registration information is available on our Summer Camp page.

Cub Scout Day Camps

Cub Scout Day Camps return in June at three locations around the Council: Camp Brorein in Odessa, Medard Park in Plant City and Sertoma Youth Ranch in Brooksville. The schedule of camps, other information, and links to our online registration pages are on our Day Camps page.

Silver Beaver Recipients

One of the highlights of the annual Council Recognition Banquet is the presentation of the Silver Beaver Award to dedicated volunteers. The award is given to registered Scouters who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the Council.

National Youth Leadership Training

Each year, the Council hosts the BSA’s National Youth Leadership Training program at Flaming Arrow Scout Reservation. Scouts are taught problem solving and leadership skills and a fun outdoor setting. More information is available on the NYLT page of our website.

Distinguished Citizen Luncheon

This year’s Distinguished Citizen Luncheon honored J. Thomas Touchton, Founding Chairman of the Tampa Bay History Center and featured Alvin Townley, author of  “Defiant,” as the keynote speaker. More information is on the Distinguished Citizen Luncheon page of our website.

Internet Rechartering

Effective Nov. 1, unit leaders can begin the rechartering process using the online portal. To begin the process, you must have the Internet Access Code found on the label on the outside of your rechartering packet. Once you have this piece of information, please visit our Internet Recharter page. Enter the Access Code and create your login information, then begin updating your unit roster. You will find links to the portal as well as a tutorial site and a knowledge base on the page.

Every Boy Deserves a Trained Leader

There are numerous training classes schedule in the months ahead. From online courses to get your started to more complex trainings, our dedicated team of volunteers can help you learn what you need to be effective as a Scout leader. For a complete listing of current courses, visit our Training Courses page.

Rappelling Tower!

Once you’ve mastered the Bouldering Wall at Camp Brorein, give the Rappelling Tower a try. It’s a whole different way to climb.

Brorein’s Bouldering Walls

Want a more active experience at Camp Brorein? Challenge yourself and your friends on the Bouldering walls.

Sailing on Swim Lake

A great way to see Flaming Arrow is from the water. Gain a new perspective on this great camp by seeing it from the water.

Scouting For Food Campaign Concluded

Scouting’s Annual campaign, Scouting for Food, concludes Saturday with Scouts from across the Council gathering the bags distributed in their neighborhoods. Scouts, Scouters and parents will then combine, sort and deliver the gathered food to local food banks.

Play for Real

One of our goals within the Gulf Ridge Council is to provide an alternative for spending time in front of “the screens.” Instead, we suggest that Scouts get  outdoors and “Play for Real!”

Camp Brorein’s Oak Hammock

Nestled between two lakes near the northwest Hillsborough County community of Odessa, Camp Brorein enjoys lots of shade and cool breezes under the span of these great oaks.

Flaming Arrow’s Waterfront

Many of the activities the Gulf Ridge Council’s flagship camp, Flaming Arrow Scout Reservation, center around the water! With three lakes, they are plenty of things to do to keep cool. From trying your luck (or skill) at catching a bass in our Fishing Lake (catch and release, please) to swimming, sailing, kayaking, canoeing or paddle boarding in the Swimming Lake, to water skiiing in the Ski Lake, there’s lots to do here!
